Entretanto, se sua casa ou apartamento for grande ou você utiliza aparelhos que demandem altas velocidades, um simples modem-router, como os que acompanham os planos de “internet via cabo”, pode não dar conta do recado. A verdade é que os modems, que também são roteadores sem fio, possuem antenas pequenas, com poucos dbi (decibéis isométricos) e podem apresentar sinais fracos, dependendo da distância ou de onde estejam instalados. Um roteador de melhor qualidade pode melhorar o sinal em caso de interferência ou quedas de sinal em locais específicos. Alguns aparelhos, como o Roteador Netgear Nighthawk Ac1900, possuem várias antenas que amplificam o sinal dentro da sua residência. Roteadores que trabalham no padrão 802.11n oferecem suporte a velocidades de até 650 Mbps. Porém, essa velocidade dificilmente se concretiza no uso real do aparelho.
